THE WORLD OF MICROCHIPS
and
AKC's Companion Recovery Service
Here at Cornerstone German Shepherds, all our puppies are microchipped, not only for the future welfare of the puppy, but for the owner’s peace of mind as well. We DO NOT CHARGE for this service. It is a very traumatic experience to lose a beloved German Shepherd, and with microchipping, the chances of recovery are much increased.
Each year thousands of lost and abandoned animals are taken in by shelters and humane societies across North America. An open door, an unlatched gate, a moment of distraction is all it can take for your German Shepherd Dog to go missing. Some of these animals never make it home because they can’t be identified.
Microchipping offers GSD owners the only truly permanent method of identifying your GSD and linking the animal back to you, the owner. Collar tags can break or be removed, and tattooing can become illegible over time. So, to improve your GSD’s chances of getting home safe and fast in case it goes missing, microchips are the only truly permanent method of identifying your Shepherd. It lasts for the lifetime of the dog.
But microchipping is not efficient unless your puppy’s microchip is registered. At no extra charge, we microchip and pre-register every puppy for proper identification. We use AKC ISO 134.2 kHz chips from AKC, the standard even in many countries across Europe, Canada and Japan. This provides pet recovery even if you and your pet travel overseas. Microchips are a permanent, non-migrating identifier that will travel with your German Shepherd for the rest of its life. Moreover, with every microchip pre-registered with AKC Reunite pet recovery service, all the new owner does is go to the AKC website and provide the name and contact numbers for recovery notification. The microchip and pre-registration are paid for by Cornerstone, a courtesy because we care about our Shepherds. Contacting AKC with the necessary name and contact phone numbers for linking your Shepherd to you are also without charge. This is a recovery service operating 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week, 365-days-a-year. The service claims to reunite an owner with their lost pet every 7 minutes.
Animal microchips are about the size of a grain of rice, typically implanted just beneath the surface of the skin along the back-line and between the shoulder blades. The process is similar to receiving vaccination through a needle and is near painless to pets. With most puppies, there is hardly a reaction when the microchip is implanted. Once implanted, the microchip remains just beneath the skin for the rest of the animal’s lifetime, a permanent form of identification.

What to Do If You Lose Your German Shepherd
First, in anticipation of such a loss…a few safeguards:
* Keep your personal information and your alternate contact information up to date in
the AKC CAR microchip database.
* Always keep a collar on your GSD with name tag and contact information–A phone

number is necessary.
* Take a look about your house and yard for ways your GSD can get out. Check for
loose fencing or gaps, and keep an eye out for new “escape routes.”
* Keep fence gates securely locked.
* You are taking a great chance of loss if you allow your GSD to roam freely in

the neighborhood.
* Take some good, up to date photos of your GSD regularly.
* Take close-up shots that show details well. You want your GSD to be unmistakable.
* Train your GSD to associate a “Dog Whistle” with pleasant things. (You can blow

the whistle each time you feed, or other pleasant activity for training.) They

will be more likely to respond to the whistle when they are lost if they associate

the sound with feeding time or some such.
* Make sure you can always be located for contact when your GSD is found.
Searching for Your Lost German Shepherd
* Call AKC Recovery Service first 1-800-252-7894 at any time -- 24/7/365.
* Search your property thoroughly.
* Walk the neighborhood, talk to everybody, and leave your phone number.
* Make noise, like calling your GSD’s name while you walk the neighborhood.

Animals respond to sound.
* Place strong-scented personal articles outside your home. Animals find their way

by scent as well as sound.
* Visit your local dog warden, and all rescue centers in your surrounding areas. Calling

is often not enough.
* Post lots of posters within a 1-mile radius of where your GSD was lost.
* Place an ad in your local newspaper.
* Check newspaper “found” ads daily.
Don’t give up! GSDs have been known to find their way back home after being lost for
several months, even years!
When Making a Lost GSD Poster, a Few Suggestions:
1. When you prepare a poster, give only a physical description.
* Do not give your GSD's name. Your GSD may not answer to its name if it is lost

and scared.
* Do not give any behavioral information. When a pet is lost its behavior can change

dramatically.
* Do not give information about your GSD’s collar. Forty percent of pets recovered are

lost with a collar and found with no collar, or even a different collar.
2. If you have a photo of your GSD make sure it describes your GSD accurately. If not, then

you may want to consider using a line drawing from a breed book that you can find

online or at your local library.
3. Writing the word “Reward” on top of the flyer in large print will attract more people. Do not

give an amount–when you give an amount you may get some crank calls from

people who do not have your GSD. A reward is not a must, but it may help.
4. Do not indicate that you think your GSD was stolen, you may scare people off. The

person returning the GSD may have nothing to do with a theft but be fearful of being

accused.

AKC Reunite -- Companion Animal Recovery
In January, 2012, Cornerstone German Shepherds began enrolling all our puppies with AKC’s pet recovery service…CAR (Companion Animal Recovery). The service is now known as AKC Reunite. We decided then to offer this at no charge to our friends who adopt a Shepherd puppy from us, just as we offer free microchipping.
This enrollment gives your German Shepherd a lifetime enrollment in the AKC Recovery Service. You pay nothing. There are no annual fees. We no longer enroll the entire litter because Cornerstone is listed as the Primary Contact party. We pre-pay the registration, but you will notify AKC to register your name and contact number. If your Shepherd is missing, when your Shepherd microchip identification number is called in to the recovery hotline, AKC Reunite will immediately notify you, instead of calling Cornerstone, and we then calling you. It is very important to keep your contact information updated online at all times. It is free of charge. The 24-hour recovery hotline is listed on all AKC Reunite issued collar tags.
Remember, with AKC Reunite, your Shepherd is enrolled for life–there are no other annual fees or charges–ever! This includes updating your contact information. You can make unlimited free updates, including phone number and address changes. Even if you go on a short vacation with your Shepherd, call AKC Reunite and they will note your temporary address and phone number. Updating is critical–the information you provide is the only means AKC Renuite has of contacting you. You can update online, or email updates to found@akcreuniter.org or fax the update to 919-233-1290. If your Shepherd becomes lost, the recovery experts are available 24/7/365 to help you be reunited with your lost Shepherd. Call 800-252-7894.
You can upgrade your AKC Reunite enrollment (at your expense) to get immediate treatment advice from animal experts around the clock. If your pet accidentally swallows something poisonous, Pet Poison Helpline is staffed by trained professionals who are available to provide immediate assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week. After adding this life-saving service, a simple call to AKC Reunite at 800-252-7894 with your pet’s identification number will gain you and your vet access to the best toxicology resources in your time of need. Steps will be recommended to treat your poisoned pet. They’ll also be available to discuss the case with you or your vet as needed. This upgrade is optional.
